Okay, I wish this could be a hundred pages longer. Color's such an intense and complex subject, there's so much that you can do with it...

Also I'm a little less than impressed with how the colors look when I switch to my other monitor after having drawn on the Cintiq. That always irks me, monitor differences :/

I didn't want to type it out because I think more about what I'm saying when I write it, and when I type I tend to ramble. Like now, I guess.

Anyway, if this helps even a couple of people, then it was worth the hours I spent on it. I'll be happy to answer any questions anyone has, to the best of my ability. If you want to tell me I'm wrong about something, OK, but make sure it's only a factual thing we're discussing. Color is completely up to each person, so let it be something factual if you'd like to debate something I've said.

Anyway... Yeah, thanks a ton to *YooMe for compiling all the images for me and making little buttons and the preloader and stuff. I don't know how to work Flash very well.

Also, if flash doesn't work for you, Eevee uploaded it in a simple format for me: [link]

And, here's the last page with sample palettes: [link]

I hope it's useful to you guys!

Edit: fixed a problem with the color wheel

EDIT: FRENCH VERSION: [link]

Edit again: I understand, RBY is a bit outdated. Perhaps in another iteration I can include RBG and CYM, though it doesn't matter as long as you understand how they relate to each other, really.

Daily Deviation

Given 2010-11-05
How I See Color - A Tutorial by =purplekecleon has spent the past few days flooding my inbox with DD suggestions from so many deviants that I figured I should feature it before they start a revolt against me! ;P It's a highly informative and thought provoking Flash presentation on color theory. This Daily Deviation was suggested by *ZulayaWolf, ~HarajukuLoversMusic, *chu00master, ~sketchLark, =Bhansith, =MzzAzn, *alicexz, `PearlEden, =Kikariz, ~dumcuibap, ~shadowsblood360, *NMNA...

(...And a few others to whom I am sorry that your names were accidentally and irretrievably deleted because my brain sucks.)

God, this is extremely helpful. It's sad my teacher never explained it this well in my color theory class.

I was reading this precisely at 4 pm and I looked at my arm and the light shining at it from the window when you said to look at somthing in our room to prove your light source theory. It did look like #2 sometimes and other like #4. Also my walls are white. It's as if you read my mind.

I always found it hard to express the color temperature to a person with little background into color theory.. now I can just link this to them

The thing about colour relativity, and mentioning character sheets with set colour palettes, really spoke to me. I used to have those set character palettes, and it made the first 12 pages of my comic look like absolute garbage.
Now I just think about how dark or light their skin is, not necessarily what the colour is.

Thank you for this tutorial, it has made me understand a lot more! Hug

I have a question, how do you mix colors to fix a colored lighting, or mood?

For traditional medium, I grew accustomed to using a pottery glaze, or pastel's mixing properties.

For digital... I'm struggling.

well i wish i wasn't that dumb but
i still don't get what complementary colors are :'D
can someone explain it to me?

:iconiyd:
iyd Featured By Owner Nov 7, 2015  Hobbyist Digital Artist
actually, complementaries are those who are completely opposite on the color wheel. They "neutralize" each other, if you put the opacity of both on 50% and overlap them, your result should be rather gray.

complementary colors are colors that look nice together. They compliment each other and don't clash.
